What can I expect in a

psychotherapy session?

The information below is meant to serve as a rough idea of what sessions look like. I always meet my clients where they are and provide a gentle, open and safe space.

We’ll start our work together by creating a 90 Day Intention Map: I’ll help you to clarify areas in your life you want to evolve in. We use the Intention Map as a foundational reference to observe progress as well as obstacles. The intention map is discussed during the first couple sessions and then “established.” We will revisit it together at each session. It is a shared, live (secured) document which you can view on your own time too. It helps us determine progress as well as challenges. Challenges are nothing to be afraid of and often promote even more self discovery. After 90 days, the intention map is refreshed and updated.

The Intention Map Is Made Up Of:

Your power word for the 90 days.

Your main intentions (areas you want to focus on).

Affirmations for each intention.

Tangible actions or intentional ways of being to ultimately bring you into alignment with your Intentions.

Meaningful journal prompts to help you gain increased self-awareness.

We’ll usually begin with a brief grounding exercise (for example- meditation, a journal prompt, a stretch). I will share many different ones with you. As time goes on, you will probably understand which ones help you the most and we can repeat them. The main purpose of the grounding exercise is to help you get present for session and to add coping tools for your daily life outside of our work together.

Once that is established, here are what sessions look like:

After the grounding exercise, we will usually create an “Intentional Agenda” to get focused on what you want to process during the session. Overall, the work we do aims to increase your self awareness around how thought, emotional and behavioral patterns impact your well being. You will increase your ability to identify and describe maladaptive patterns so you can work through them. Accountability is also provided for the transformational process. 

You’ll receive encouragement to integrate what we discuss in session through “integration hw.” This might include journal prompts to help you engage in inner work, self care or other types of action steps. The aim here is to give you momentum in the transformational process and to INTEGRATE insights from session into your daily life. Shifts and transformation often occur OUTSIDE of session. So, you get what you put in!

We’ll reflect on WINS and obstacles that arise as they come up. I take a very compassionate view here as obstacles arising are an opportunity to observe/evaluate your shadows and maladaptive patterns. There is no shame here! Just opportunities for learning and ultimately increasing your SELF LOVE.
